I type for my profession every workday. Except weekends.
After doing that long enough, I started wondering how fast everybody else types. Part curiosity, part being judgmental. I wanted a typing test that was accurate, but I also wanted it to be fun.
Normal typing tests give you a paragraph that feels like it was written by a filing cabinet. I wanted unsuspecting victims online to start typing something that seemed normal, then realize a little too late that the story had gone completely off the rails.
That became Type This Shit!. It measures WPM and accuracy, feeds the story in from the right, keeps track of your mistakes, and insults you when you finish.
It also measures typing speed in miles per hour.
Because why the hell wouldn’t it?

The world’s first* typing test that measures in MPH
The MPH readout was the part I was most excited about. You finish typing some weird shit, the screen says you did 55 words per minute, and right next to it is a speed that makes a mobility scooter look dangerous.
But the MPH number could not be fake. That was probably the most important part to me. If you’re gonna do it, you gotta do it right. I wanted it just as accurate as the rest of the test.
The game uses the physical size of your display and the amount of text moving across it to estimate the letters’ real-world speed. Calibrate your screen and it gives you a calibrated average MPH. It is a real calculation for a completely unnecessary number.

What does WPM actually mean?
WPM means words per minute. A typing test usually counts every five characters, including spaces and punctuation, as one word. It does not wait for you to type five nice, normal English words and then ask how that went.
If you type 250 characters in one minute, that works out to about 50 gross WPM. Mistakes can lower the adjusted score, which is why Type This Shit! shows adjusted WPM, accuracy, and total mistakes together.
If you want the proper classroom version, Typing.com explains the standard WPM calculation here.
What is a good typing speed?
There is no single score that makes you officially good at typing. Aalto University found an average of about 52 WPM in a large online study, with most people around 30 to 60 WPM.
- 30–40 WPM: You’re getting it done.
- 40–60 WPM: Solid everyday typing.
- 60–80 WPM: Pretty damn quick.
- 80+ WPM: Now you’re showing off.
Accuracy still matters. Fast typing with a pile of mistakes just means you created more work faster.
Fast and accurate are not the same thing
One real run came in at 42 adjusted WPM with 89.5% accuracy. Another hit 58 adjusted WPM with 75% accuracy and 79 mistakes.
The second one was faster. It was also wrong a lot.

That is also why the game has Show What I Typed. It shows the full story with correct text in green, mistakes in red, and missed text highlighted. There is nowhere for your fingers to hide.
The stories start normal. Then it is too late.
The original idea was to make a typing test where the material was actually entertaining. I ended up with weird stories that reveal themselves while you type.
There are 1-minute, 2-minute, and 5-minute modes. You might get The Rental Car Whale, The Refrigerator Negotiator, or The Sleep Subscription. One minute you are typing a normal sentence. The next, a mattress is offering you a bundle if you agree to share your tossing data with selected partners.
By the time you understand what you are typing, you are already in it.

The insults are the payoff
My favorite part is the end. You finish typing the weirdest thing you have read all day, get your score, and then the game mocks you.
You might get: “The only thing faster than you is my grandma, and she has two broken legs.” Or: “Your fingers are faster than your common sense.”
At that point you should be asking, “Where am I?”

Corporate Dave wandered into this somehow
Corporate Dave is exactly the kind of person who would accidentally type an absurd story about a vending machine suing him, then ask whether the results can be put in a spreadsheet.
He is photo-realistic, a little bit silly, and holding the red stapler because of course he is.

Try it
I did not build this for a target audience. It is for any unsuspecting victim online.
Pick a timer, type the story, and see what happens. You will get your WPM, accuracy, mistakes, personal bests, and a real MPH number that is much more disappointing than you expect.
Quick answers
Is 40 WPM a good typing speed?
Yes. For a lot of people, 40 WPM is a useful everyday speed. Accuracy matters too.
How does the one-minute typing test work?
Choose the one-minute mode and start typing. When time runs out, the game shows adjusted WPM, accuracy, mistakes, MPH, and an insult.
What does MPH mean in this typing game?
It is the estimated real-world speed of the text moving across your display. Calibrating the screen makes the number more accurate.
Is Type This Shit! really the world’s first MPH typing test?
It might be. I have not found another one, but the claim is still unverified. That is why the asterisk stays.
Is it free?
Yep. Play it in your browser at dalesmom.com/type-this-shit/.
*About the “world’s first” claim: It is a playful, unverified claim based on what I have found so far.
